But it is proximity to New York City that gives the region its advantage. Many of the choicest wines from the 49 producers in the Finger Lakes area, the state's biggest winegrowing region, are sold only upstate; they rarely enter New York City's market and its East End orbit, which can build national reputations.

Because the East End's 16 wineries are so close to New York City, it is easy to attract New Yorkers' attention and to get products into New York retail stores and restaurants. Producers can also rebuild customers' inventories within a few hours. Gene Pierce, the president of Glenora, a major Finger Lakes producer, agreed. Long Island owners have been businessmen. They have had more experience in marketing and sales than we. We need to learn to cooperate to promote the region's reach and image.

Now it's the beginning of May through Thanksgiving. East End wineries are open all year long, with seasonally adjusted hours. For day trippers, the region is 90 miles from midtown Manhattan, about a two-hour drive the Finger Lakes are five hours away. In truth, I have not found Long Island's sparkling wines to be as good as those from California. East End producers are elated by the vintage. They say the overall quality of last year's wines is the best ever only a few '93's have been released.

Alex Hargrave of Hargrave Vineyard in Cutchogue pronounced the '93 growing conditions virtually perfect from start to finish. Palmer, of Palmer Vineyards, said: "Long Island is on a roll.

Any hyperbole aside, visitors are more likely to confuse the North Fork with Indiana. Offering miles of flat fields, ponds, farm stands bending under vegetables and fruits, wooden frame houses, white clapboard churches, picket fences and old cemeteries, the area is rural and small-town middle American in appearance and spirit. We'll be back. We hope to discover a small label and a wine we really love. Producers are now introducing sophisticated agricultural and cellar techniques.

And as their vines age, in good years they can deliver grapes of great complexity. Many of the wineries are converted potato barns or barn knockoffs. Lenz occupies a funky old barn. Pindar's immense salesroom, lighted by a huge stained-glass window with a kitschy winegrowing motif and faux Tiffany lamps with grape motifs, seems perpetually thronged. Pellegrini's two-story cathedral-like tasting room, buttressed by an oak post-and-beam frame, is the handsomest on the East End.

Palmer's tasting room is furnished with remnants of a London pub. Chardonnay and merlot are Long Island's top wines. Some chardonnays tend to be Chablis-like -- lighter, leaner and crisper than California's -- and the barrel-fermented versions somewhat Burgundian. The outstanding merlots, typically medium-bodied, stress lively aromas and flavors and, in ripe vintages, display plenty of meatiness and depth.

John Bedell -- Kip to everyone -- expressed barely restrained enthusiasm this spring as he poured opulent '93 samples of his regular and reserve merlots aging in American-oak barrels. Bedell merlots have steadily taken top honors in contests sponsored by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, a trade group.
